JOHN W. FELTON PUBLIC RELATIONS SCHOLARSHIPS

The John W. Felton Public Relations Endowed Scholarship fund was created in 2001 through a gift from Betsy Plank. Through the fund, two scholarships are given annually to promote the education of students pursuing degrees in public relations at the University of Alabama. Eleven students have received the scholarships since 2001.

Priority consideration is given to students who demonstrate high potential and promise as public relations professionals, express strong interest in pursuing careers in the field, and are members of the Public Relations Student Society of America at the University. Recipients are selected by the standing scholarship committee in the College of Communication & Information Sciences at UA.

  • Recipients for 2008-2009 are Dana Lewis and Francis Flanagan
  • Recipients for 2007-2008 were Dustin Fowler and Mary Roberson.
  • Recipients for 2006-2007 were Breeanna Beckham and Rebecca Buchanan.

The scholarships are named in honor of John W. Felton, a distinguished figure in public relations who has held leadership positions in such companies as United States Steel Corporation and McCormick Spice Company. Felton twice served as national president of the Public Relations Society of America, and he is president and CEO Emeritus of the Institute for Public Relations. He has received numerous awards over the course of his career, and he currently serves as member of the Board of Advisors for The Plank Center, among many other activities.
