Dr. Nilanjana R. Bardhan is a professor and former director of graduate studies in the Department of Communication Studies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC).

Nilanjana’s teaching interests include public relations, intercultural/international communication and cultural studies. She has been awarded the Outstanding Faculty Award in the Communication Studies Department at SIUC three times.  In 2019, Dr. Bardhan received the SIUC Women of Distinction Award. In 2020, she received the SIUC College of Liberal Arts Outstanding Teacher Award. She advised SIUC’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter for 10 years and continues to be involved with the organization.

In terms of professional service, Nilanjana is currently a member of the National Communication Association (NCA) and the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). She has served as an officer for NCA’s PR Division. She has also been involved with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and the International Communication Association (ICA). At SIUC, she has been on the advisory board of the Global Media Research Center and is a member of the Chancellor’s Taskforce on Diversity.

Nilanjana is co-editor of Public Relations in Global Cultural Contexts (Routledge) and Identity Research and Communication, and co-author of Cultivating Cosmopolitanism for Intercultural Communication. She has published several book chapters, and articles in journals such as the Journal of Public Relations Research, Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, Journal of Public Relations Education, Journal of Communication Management, Mass Communication & Society, Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, and the International Journal of Strategic Communication.

Nilanjana received her B.A from Delhi University, and her M.S.J. and Ph.D. from the Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.
